Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR)

Is the combination of a membrane process like microfiltration or ultra filtration with a suspended growth bioreactor and is now widely used for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment It is possible to operate MBR processes at higher mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations compared to conventional settlement separation systems, thus reducing the reactor volume to achieve the same loading rate.

Advantages & Disadvantages Of MBR

Advantages :

  • Safe rejection of Bio Mass.
  • Enhanced Standard of Hygiene through barrier filtration.
  • Consistent BOD levels of 3-7 ppm.
  • Ultra filtered water free of pathogens.
  • SDI < 3 achieved consistently.
  • Can tolerate larger input variations.
  • Disinfection only based on specific requirement.

Disadvantages :

  • Higher capital costs.
  • Need to control membrane fouling at higher costs.
  • Potential high cost of periodic membrane replacement.

Features Of MBR

  • Small layout size of plant.
  • No odour and noise.
  • Less risk of biomass loss.
  • Complete bacteria removal takes place.
  • Fastest construction and no need for permanent crew.
