What is Sewage treatment?

Is the process of removing contaminants from waste water, primarily from household sewage. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove these contaminants and produce environmentally safe treated wastewater (or treated effluent). A by-product of sewage treatment is usually a semi-solid waste or slurry, called sewage sludge that has to undergo further treatment before being suitable for disposal or land application.

Sewage Treatment Plant Types

The four important technologies are :

  • ACTIVATED SLUDGE PROCESS (ASP)
  • SEQUENTIAL BATCH REACTOR (SBR)
  • MOVING BED BIO REACTOR (MBBR)
  • MEMBRANE BIO REACTOR (MBR)

We need an STP for :

  • Achieves the desired results on a consistent and sustained basis.
  • Is robust and reliable, and lasts for at least 10-15 years without major repairs.
  • Needs minimum amounts of money, energy and chemicals to achieve the desired treated water quality.
  • Is easy to operate and maintain.
